New Renault 5: Zoe successor with a price from €25,000

21 Mar 2024

Renault has unveiled a new compact electric hatchback, the Renault 5 E-Tech, which refers to the legendary "5" model of 1972 and replaces the brand's first modern compact electric car, the Zoe. The new model is based on a new e-platform, which the French manufacturer says makes it available at an affordable price.

The new e-platform

The Renault 5 E-Tech is based on the AmpR Small platform, formerly known as the CMF-B EV. This platform is specifically designed for smaller B-segment EVs and is also available to Renault partners.

Renault ensures that although the platform uses some elements from the CMF-B platform, which underpins the Clio and Capture models, it is a platform specifically designed for electric vehicles. This platform should make the 5 E-Tech affordable, even though it will be built in France.

Specifications

The Renault 5 E-Tech is an electric compact hatchback with dimensions of 3.92 x 1.77 x 1.50 m (length x width x height), a wheelbase of 2.54 m, a kerb weight of under 1,500 kg, a boot capacity of 326 litres, a turning circle of 10.3 m, a towing capacity of 500 kg and 18" wheels (applicable to each version).

Different versions

To start with, there will be a version with 110 kW of power, 245 Nm of torque, 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 8 seconds, a top speed limited to 150 km/h, a 52 kWh NMC battery and a range of 400 km (WLTP). Other versions will offer 70 and 90 kW of power, 215 and 225 Nm of torque, a 40 kWh NMC battery and a range of 300 km.

Charging

The Renault 5 E-Tech's higher capacity battery supports a maximum charging power of 100 kW. For the smaller battery, this is 80 kW. Charging from 15% to 80% should take 30 minutes. The on-board charger has a capacity of 11 kW, and for the 110 and 90 kW versions it is bi-directional and supports V2L and V2G technologies.

Availability and price

The Renault 5 E-Tech should be available from September this year. There's talk of a price of around €25,000.
